Associate of Applied Science Degree

Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) prepares you to use highly complex medical imaging equipment, analyze acquired images for quality, assess patient condition, and apply appropriate techniques of patient care and education. In addition to fostering your intellectual growth, we advise you to exercise good judgment, demonstrate a professional demeanor, display the highest moral and ethical standards, and promote the safety of yourself and your patients.

Declaring the Diagnostic Medical Sonography AAS as your major does not mean you’ve been officially admitted to the program yet. Admission to this program is selective and competitive. There are prerequisite classes and additional steps you’ll need to complete before you can apply for program entry to be considered for program acceptance. All applicants must possess a two-year health-related (patient care-related) degree or a four-year degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Note: You must undergo a background check and drug screen before we can officially admit you into the program. A felony, loss of license, administrative disciplinary proceeding for negligence, malpractice, recklessness, or willful or intentional misconduct may prohibit entrance into the program and/or eligibility to sit for licensure exams.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography degree program, students should be able to:

• Perform diagnostic sonographic procedures using proper techniques and equipment in both classroom and clinical settings
• Demonstrate patient-centered care by effectively communicating with patients and adhering to ethical and professional standards in clinical practice
• Apply knowledge of sonographic principles and protocols during clinical internships at hospitals and clinics
• Analyze sonographic images to identify normal and abnormal anatomical structures
• Complete mock prep exam for American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography
• Execute the essential duties and responsibilities required for entry-level diagnostic medical sonography positions in healthcare settings
